SALT CONFERENCE 2009
University of Stirling
7 November 2009
This year's conference has as its central theme the Curriculum for Excellence. Contributions will focus on practice rather than theory as speakers outline their experience in tackling materials and projects which exemplify the new syllabus.
Fuller details will be contained in the conference brochure which will be delivered to schools and other institutions at the start of the new session. The following topics will certainly be covered: syllabus planning, using ICT, inclusion, cross-curricular links, and progression from primary into secondary. In addition, basic pedagogic issues will be addressed, as well as specific inputs on links with schools abroad, addressing the needs of learners whose first language is not English, and post-16 concerns. There will be a range of talks outlining the resources available to support the new curriculum and the traditional exhibition featuring publishers and other specialist suppliers.
The opening address will be from Professor Do Coyle, who has been a major innovator at national U.K. level in strengthening the role of languages on the curriculum as a whole.
In the light of extensive feedback from participants in the 2008 conference, the basic format of the conference has been changed. There will be four sessions of talks (two in the morning, two in the afternoon) and conference will close earlier than in previous years. Even so, more time will be devoted to talks than in previous years. Otherwise, everything that people like is still in place: a welcoming drink and nibble on arrival, good lunch, opportunities to meet friends and make new ones, and all in the best campus setting in Scotland. The only thing we cannot guarantee is the weather.
Administration is once again in the hands of our partners, SCILT, and registration will for the first time be entirely online. Conference fees are still to be finalised, but any increase will be kept to an absolute minimum.
Updated conference information can be found at regular intervals on the SALT and SCILT websites.
